What You Need For This Course

While you can make a course using nothing but a blog, I don't recommend it as it will cause you more headaches and you'll find it nearly impossible to scale up. Instead, I will be recommending you create your courses the way I do. Why? Because I know that it WORKS.

So here's what you need:

  • A reliable and modern online course platform. I will be teaching the Teachable platform in this course, but you could use Thinkific or Podia instead (I just can't support those platforms in this course as I don't use them)
  • A reliable and modern email service provider (ESP). I will be teaching the ConvertKit platform as that is what I use. You should already have an ESP or be planning to get it, because developing and nurturing a mailing list is an important part of marketing your course.
  • A way to survey your people. This can be as simple as using the free Google Forms service. I use Wufoo.com.
  • Your own platform(s) with followers to which you can market your course. This could be a blog or social media channel, but is preferably a mailing list. If you do not have a mailing list yet, my LIST LOVE course can show you how to build one (and I put a coupon for the LIST LOVE course inside this one to help you out with that).
  • A commitment to listen to your people when they tell you what they want as a course, rather than just make what you want.
  • Patience with the method, yourself, and your students. I'm not a particularly patient person, so I don't think you need a LOT, but you do need some.

Here are things I recommend you have:

  • A way to take photos and videos (a smartphone will work if you have nothing else, but I also use my iMac Pro webcam and this point-and-shoot camera. I will teach you how to use both in this course).
  • If you include videos, you'll need a place to host your videos (such as YouTube or Vimeo account). You do not need this if you're using Teachable, as you can upload your videos there directly (which is what I do).
  • A way to create PDF documents (Google Docs will work if you have nothing else, but I use Adobe InDesign. I will teach you how to use both in this course).
  • A way to create graphics (Canva will work if you have nothing else, but I use Adobe Photoshop. I will teach you how to use both in this course).

And here are some totally optional things that I think make a difference:

  • LeadPages (you can use Teachable's sales page, but you'll get better conversions with LeadPages)
  • Zapier (for setting up integrations with other tools, not all of which are built into Teachable)

Meta: Let your students know upfront before they ever enroll what they need to take and make the most of your course.
